Asphalt Driveway Cost Formula
The estimate combines asphalt material, labor, optional removal and waste.
Area = length x width, or known square feet
Tons = area x thickness x density / 2,000
Material cost = tons x price per ton
Total cost = material + labor + removal
Example Calculation
A 40 ft by 12 ft driveway at 3 inches thick needs about 9.14 tons of asphalt with 5% waste. At $120 per ton and $4.50 per square foot for labor, the estimated total is about $3,256 before local adjustments.
Calculation Notes
- Area-only mode is useful when you already know driveway square footage.
- Resurfacing is often thinner than a new driveway.
- Base repair, grading, drainage and local minimum charges can change the final quote.
FAQ
Is asphalt charged by ton or square foot?
Materials are often estimated by ton, while installed driveway quotes are commonly discussed by square foot.
Should resurfacing use a different thickness?
Resurfacing often uses about 2 inches, while new driveways commonly use about 3 to 4 inches.
Does this include base gravel?
No. This estimate covers asphalt material, labor and optional removal. Use a gravel calculator for base material.
Can I use known driveway square footage?
Yes. Switch the input mode to square feet and enter the driveway area directly.
