Estimate Gravel Needed

Gravel Calculator Formula

Choose a rectangle, circle or known area, multiply by depth, then use density to estimate tons.

Rectangle area = length x width

Circle area = pi x radius squared

Volume = area x depth

Tons = volume x density / 2,000

Example Calculation

A 30 ft by 12 ft gravel area at 3 inches deep is 90 cubic feet, or 3.33 cubic yards. At 100 lb/ft3 and 5% waste, estimate about 4.73 tons.

Calculation Notes

  • Rectangle mode works well for driveways, paths and beds.
  • Circle mode is useful for round beds, fire pit areas and circular features.
  • Known-area mode keeps the form short if you already measured square footage.
  • Gravel density varies by stone type, moisture and compaction.

FAQ

How many tons are in a cubic yard of gravel?

Many gravel types are roughly 1.3 to 1.5 tons per cubic yard.

Should I include waste?

Yes. Use about 5% for simple areas and more for irregular shapes or grading changes.

Can I calculate a circular gravel area?

Yes. Choose circle area and enter the diameter and depth.

What depth should I use for gravel?

Paths may use around 2 inches, while driveways and base layers are often deeper.
