Estimate Asphalt Needed

Asphalt Calculator Formula and Steps

Measure a rectangle or enter known square footage, choose compacted thickness, then apply density and waste.

Area = length x width, or known square feet

Volume = area x thickness

Tons = volume x density / 2,000

Total tons = tons x (1 + waste percentage)

For square feet to tons of asphalt, use square feet x thickness in feet x density in lb/ft3 / 2,000.

Example Calculation

For a 40 ft by 12 ft driveway at 3 inches thick, the area is 480 square feet. The volume is 120 cubic feet, or 4.44 cubic yards. At 145 lb/ft3, that is about 8.70 tons before waste. With 5% waste, estimate about 9.14 tons.

Calculation Notes

  • Hot mix asphalt is often estimated around 140 to 150 lb/ft3; 145 lb/ft3 is a common planning default.
  • Resurfacing often uses about 2 inches, while residential driveways often use about 3 to 4 inches.
  • Waste helps cover edges, compaction, base variation and ordering tolerance.
  • For final orders, confirm mix type, compacted thickness, density and delivery requirements locally.

FAQ

How do you calculate asphalt tonnage?

Multiply area by asphalt thickness to get cubic feet, multiply by density, divide by 2,000, then add waste.

How many tons of asphalt do I need?

It depends on area, thickness, density and waste. Enter your dimensions or square footage to estimate total tons.

How do I convert square feet to tons of asphalt?

Use square feet times thickness in feet times density in lb/ft3, then divide by 2,000.

What asphalt density should I use?

Use 145 lb/ft3 for a planning estimate unless your supplier gives a project-specific density.

How thick should asphalt be for a driveway?

Resurfacing often uses about 2 inches. New residential driveways often use about 3 to 4 inches.

How much does asphalt cost per ton?

Asphalt cost per ton varies by region, mix type, order size and delivery. Enter a local price per ton for a material cost estimate.
