Cubic Yard Formula
Calculate the area for the selected shape, multiply by depth, then divide cubic feet by 27.
Rectangle volume = length x width x depth
Cylinder volume = pi x radius squared x depth
Cubic yards = cubic feet / 27
Example Calculation
A 20 ft by 12 ft area at 4 inches deep is 80 cubic feet, or 2.96 cubic yards.
Calculation Notes
Use cubic yards for concrete, gravel, pea gravel, mulch, soil, sand and other bulk materials. Material weight still depends on density and moisture.
FAQ
How many cubic feet are in a cubic yard?
There are 27 cubic feet in one cubic yard.
Can I calculate a circular area?
Yes. Choose circle / cylinder and enter the diameter and depth.
Why do suppliers use cubic yards?
Cubic yards are convenient for bulk materials because they describe volume independent of material weight.
