Estimate Pea Gravel Needed

Pea Gravel Calculator Formula

Pea gravel is estimated from area, depth, density and waste. Rectangle, circle and known-area inputs use the same volume conversion after area is known.

Volume = area x depth

Cubic yards = cubic feet / 27

Tons = volume x density / 2,000

Example Calculation

A 20 ft by 8 ft pea gravel path at 2 inches deep is 26.67 cubic feet, or 0.99 cubic yards. At 95 lb/ft3 and 5% waste, estimate about 1.33 tons.

Calculation Notes

  • Use about 2 inches for light paths and about 3 inches for patios or landscape beds.
  • Circle mode is useful for round beds and circular landscape features.
  • 95 lb/ft3 is a planning density; local pea gravel can vary by source and moisture.

FAQ

Is pea gravel measured in tons or cubic yards?

Suppliers may quote either. This calculator shows both.

What density should I use?

95 lb/ft3 is a reasonable planning value unless your supplier provides a better number.

Can I calculate a round pea gravel bed?

Yes. Choose circle area and enter the diameter and depth.

How deep should pea gravel be?

Light paths often use about 2 inches. Patios and beds may use about 3 inches or more.
